Rare Car Up For Auction (The Courier)

A RARE car is set to fetch up to £50,000 when it comes up for sale in a Perthshire auction.

The 1935 Alvis Speed Twenty Mayfair is one of a sought after marque that was favoured by people ranging from royalty to pop stars to murders. Experts believe the saloon car will attract fierce bidding and say it could be worth twice as much had it been an open-top model. The car is being sold by Errol company Morris Leslie Vehicle Auctions as part of its Classic Vehicle and Machinery sale tomorrow.

Auction manager Keith Murray said he expected the main bidders to be car collectors and investors.

He said "The Alvis brand of car attracted some real characters - pop stars and murderers. In their day Alvis was an expensive purchase costing as much and more as an equivalent Rolls-Royce. This example has attracted interest from Philadelphia, Spain and various parts of the UK. Having driven this fine restored example, it’s fair to say it puts a smile on my face; the note of the engine and the smooth comfortable ride are astounding for a 78-year-old vehicle perhaps this is why this car is expected to achieve in excess of £50,000."

The car was imported to the UK in the 1990s, having been abroad in Norway and the Netherlands. The Alvis Car and Engineering Company was founded in 1919 and was bought over by Rover in the late sixties. Fans include Prince Phillip, Douglas Bader, Danish pop duo Nina & Frederick and the ‘acid bath’ murder John George Haigh. Other owners have included King Ghazi of Iraq, entertainer George Formby, champion jockey Steven Donoghue and novelist Alec Waugh.

The sale will feature around 150 vintage cars, tractors, machinery and lorries and, in addition to the Alvis, buyers have the chance to get their hands on a Jaguar E-Type V12 and a pair of Nilsson Volvos - one a stretch limo and the other a hearse! At its last vintage auction, Morris Leslie sold off Winston Churchill’s last car, a beautiful Morris Oxford.
